Fabian Basabe

Fabián Basabe is a New York-born entrepreneur, environmental advocate, arts supporter, and Florida legislator whose multicultural upbringing shaped his commitment to public service. After working in media and supporting several charitable organizations, he was elected in 2022 to represent Florida House District 106 and reelected in 2024. His legislative priorities include supporting educators, law enforcement, first responders, vulnerable communities, environmental preservation, and sustainable growth.

Position on major issues

Abortion and reproductive policy

Abortion Regulations: During his initial campaign, Basabe ran as a supporter of abortion rights. However, when the Florida Legislature voted on the state's restrictive six-week abortion ban in 2023, Basabe abstained from the final vote and did not cross party lines to fight the bill. He subsequently claimed he attempted to work behind the scenes to negotiate a 12-week threshold compromise.

Housing

Condominium and Real Estate Reform: Following the Surfside condo collapse, Basabe has advocated for increased state oversight over homeowner associations and condo boards. He supports expanding funding for home-hardening programs (such as the My Safe Florida Home initiative) and hiring dozens of dedicated state investigators to root out condo board financial misconduct. While he originally supported the Live Local Act in 2023 to incentivize housing construction, he has since called to scrap it, arguing it invites dense development without adequate structural safeguards.
